Rare mid 19th Century American sea chest with canted sides, original hinges & till; black paint with remnants of canvas which would have wrapped the chest. Original outstanding sailor-made macrame beckets tarred to protect them from the elements. Outstanding original painting in lid of a steam/ sail ship, 2 American flags, one with 13 stars harking back to 1776 and Independence. The other with 30 stars, helping to date the piece, as Wisconsin was admitted as the 30th state in 1848. “Free Trade” slogan was a popular slogan with sailors dating to the War of 1812 and throughout the 19th Century. Perfect for use as either a trunk or coffee table.
