“Clipper Ship Flying Cloud Off Tuskar Rocks,” oil on canvas painting, signed lower right by Canadian artist, Wilfred Molson Barnes (1892-1955). Barnes was known for his marine portraits done in earlier primitive style of such artists as William Hare. Flying Cloud was the most famous clipper ship from the yard of David McKay, Boston, built in 1851, she twice set the record for passage from New York to San Francisco. Her 1853 record stood until 1989. Her navigator was Eleanor Creesey, wife of the ship’s captain, Josiah Perkins Creesey. Tuskar Rocks , located on the southeastern Irish coast, are one of the most perilous threats to navigation. In bird’s eye maple frame.
