Rare tank test hull model believed to be of the America’s Cup Defender, “Ranger,” from the 1930s. Ranger was the first yacht tank tested by the Stevens Institute, Hoboken, New Jersey in the 1930s for speed design optimization. Carved from sugar pine, the keel shows modification from earlier design. The model still retains traces of old sand finish along leading edge of keel, used to take into account the effects of laminar flow of water on the model. Model sits on new southern heart of pine stand. See recent August 2015 Thomaston Place Auction Galleries results for sale of 2 Stevens models of Intrepid and Weatherly for $10,000 and $5,750, respectively. A special piece of yacht racing history!
