Collage made of hat ribbons from British Navy sailors from 1930’s who pinned the ribbons to the ceiling of a bar in France where they drank on liberty while stationed in the Mediterranean during the Spanish Civil War to try to contain German U-boats. The barkeeper’s wife made the collage and started scrapbooks with photos of the sailors, note cards, Christmas cards from the crews and letters from the British authorities tracing the fates of the vessels during WWII when many sank. Included are some of the most famous of the British Navy such as HMS Hood.
This remarkable piece of naval history has had only 3 prior owners !!!!
