Ship portrait of 125′ steam/sail vessel “Avenel” by New York artist Thomas Willis (1850 – 1925 ). Oil on canvas with applied silk thread for ship and rigging. Willis was famous for these ‘silky’ portraits’. “Avenel” was owned by Mr. Spaulding, a sugar merchant and member of The New York Yacht Club. Circa 1900 – 1915.
